Pass Lake, just six miles south of Anacortes off SR-20, is a fantastic fly-fishing-only destination that’s perfect for catching and releasing some impressive trout. You’ll find Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout here. Most average around 15 inches, with some reaching an impressive 28 inches.

It’s a peaceful spot to escape into the quiet and focus on your fishing.

Fishing Pass Lake in Mid-February

In mid-February, the cold water means trout can be a bit less active, but don’t let that discourage you—it’s still a great time to fish if you adapt to the conditions. The fish are often hanging out in deeper parts of the lake where temperatures are more stable, so focusing on those areas will give you the best results.

Licensing & Parking Requirements

Make sure you’ve got a Discover Pass for parking (the yellow WDFW tags won’t cut it here). There’s a boat launch if you’re bringing a float tube or small boat, but motors aren’t allowed.

Plan for Winter Weather

February can bring some unpredictable weather, so dress warmly, and don’t forget a life vest and whistle—better safe than sorry. Check the forecast before heading out and if you decide to venture off to another part of the lake on your own, let someone know your plans.

Pass Lake is winter gem, especially when you take the time to adjust your technique to the season. With the right flies, a little patience, and a focus on safety, you’re in for a great day on the water.
