Join geologist Andrew Alden, author of Deep Oakland: How Geology Shaped a City, for an exciting and informative 2.1-mile walk through the heart of Oakland’s natural history! This vigorous hike will visit all three of the watersheds that unite to form Sausal Creek as we ascend into the largest piece of undeveloped land in Castle Canyon. Along the way, we’ll enjoy wider views of the hills and Dimond Canyon as we return.

On this walk, we’ll see where a major fault has juxtaposed two very different sets of rocks and witness spring on nature’s terms. Andrew will share the fascinating geological forces that have shaped the region, including how movements of the Earth’s crust assembled the intimate landscape that gives Sausal Creek its water.

Meeting Point: Meet at the intersection of Scout Road and Mountain Boulevard. Parking is limited, so we recommend taking the 33 bus and exiting at Snake Road or the end of the line, then walking down to Scout Road.

Accessibility: The hike will feature an elevation gain of about 500 feet, with terrain that includes rocky paths and uneven surfaces. The approximately 2.1-mile route may be challenging for some. As there are no sidewalks and the canyon is without roads, we recommend sturdy footwear and ask participants to remain mindful of the environment, especially if we have a larger group.
