Join us from May 1 to May 4 for our annual trip to the Winthrop area, nestled in Washington's picturesque Methow Valley. Known for its Old West-style downtown and surrounded by the rugged beauty of the North Cascades, Winthrop offers a unique blend of rich history and unmarred landscapes.

Our focus will be on Buzzard Lake, Davis Lake, and Big & Little Twin Lakes, all renowned for their excellent stillwater fly fishing opportunities. Whether you're new to lake fishing or a seasoned angler, this outing promises rewarding fishing experiences in one serene setting after the next.

What to Expect

Springtime in the Methow Valley can bring a mix of weather conditions. Expect daytime highs in the 60s°F and mornings in the 30s-40s°F. Winds can pick up in the afternoon, so layering and bringing a windproof jacket is recommended.

A watercraft is required for this trip. Bring your pontoon boat, pram, or float tube. Trolling motors are not allowed on Davis Lake, so be prepared to row or kick. Personal floatation devices and whistles are mandatory.

Lake Structure & Fishing Conditions

Each of the lakes we’ll be fishing has unique characteristics that influence fish behavior in early May:

Buzzard Lake – A deep, clear lake with healthy populations of rainbow trout. Fish tend to hold near the drop-offs and submerged structure, especially early in the season.
Davis Lake – A shallower, weedy lake where trout are often found near the shoreline cover and mid-depth feeding zones. With no trolling motors allowed, expect a more peaceful fishing experience.
Big Twin Lake – A popular trophy trout fishery, known for large rainbows. Fish often suspend in 8-15 feet of water, making indicator fishing and slow retrieves effective.
Little Twin Lake – Smaller but productive, Little Twin offers good shallow-water fishing early in the season, especially with leeches and chironomids.

Lodging & Logistics

Winthrop offers a variety of lodging, from motels and cabins to RV parks and campgrounds. Club members looking for a shared base camp are also encouraged to ask about the possibility of an Airbnb that is being organized by the club, offering excellent facilities and proximity to the fishing locations.

Pack your floating and sinking lines, a selection of chironomids, leeches, and streamers, and plenty of warm layers—this trip promises great fishing and even better company!
