Talmud through a Different Lens with Rabbinic Fellow Talia Kaplan

We will explore how reading Talmud, a central rabbinic body of text, through the lens of various disciplines can inform how we experience text. In doing so, there will simultaneously be entry points for those who have not studied Talmud before and something different for Talmud veterans. Knowledge of Hebrew or Aramaic is not necessary, as translations will be used, but please bring a willingness to try reading texts in a new way. Come for one, two, or all three sessions.

Prolific composer Sondheim’s work Sweeney Todd is being revived on Broadway, but what if we brought it to class in Brooklyn? Through Sondheim’s approach to lyric writing, we’ll gain familiarity with conventions of the Talmudic narrative.
